Corner of Mohawk and Washington Streets over time.

The northwest corner of Mohawk and Washington Streets, prior to 1920. These
buildings were demolished in 1920
to make way for the Century Theater which opened October 17, 1921.

The Mohawk entrance to the Century Theater as seen in 1967. The theater, which
seated 3000, featured five acts of
vaudeville and a silent film as its opening show. In later years, it housed
touring shows and, as apparent in the photo
above, movies. It was demolished in 1979.*

The same corner, 2003, now occupied by an Allright Parking lot.
* Information about the theater quoted from
an article by Charles Stein, "Buffalo's Downtown Movie Theaters - A Class
Act" which
appeared in the Winter 1999 issue of the WNY Heritage Magazine.
