The Electric Building, corner of Genesee and Huron Streets, Buffalo, around
1919
Interior of the Electric Building, c 1919. Note the modern 'open plan' of the
area, where fresh air from the window at right circulates without restriction,
where employee access to drinking water, telephone or cuspidor is convenient.
The lighting is bright and uniform, and the sense of openness is extended into
the hallway by a row of upper windows at left. Counter space for customers is
gently separated from the work area by a counter and low swinging gate; this
permits staffing flexibility becase any employee can see a customer and rise
to wait on him/her. This space, democratic in its uniformity, also will permit
future re-organization of the area with minimal reconstruction costs.
