From 1816 through 1865, the location was occupied by the Phoenix Hotel.
Upon demolition of the Phoenix Hotel, the Tifft House Hotel was constructed.
It endured for 28 years with a good reputation.

The Hengerer building still stands on Main near Lafayette Square (red arrow)
although its exterior has been extensively
remodeled over the years. In the late 1980's, after the Hengerer's/Sibley s
closed this location in the mid-1980's, the building
was converted into office space and renamed Lafayette Court.
