Erie Basin Marina 1930 - 1980's

1930 aerial view of the Erie Basin and the Canal District. After years of review and discussion, the city began to demolish much of the
Canal District in the late 1930's and displacing hundreds from their substandard housing. (To view the Erie Basin in the late 1950's
from the lake, look here.)

The high-rise apartments in the center of this 1980's image were completed in 1952 with New York State funding and named "Dante
Place" apartments after a Canal District street. The complex began life as low-income housing and later became known as the
Marine Drive Apartments. Marine Drive itself is laid over the Evans Ship Canal bed. The site of the former Crawdaddy's Restaurant
marks the location of the Coit Slip. After extensive work, the Erie Basin Marina, with its publicly accessible waterfront, was opened
in 1974.
