Philip Riter & the Eagle Boiler Works, 1870's

The photo above "was probably taken prior to March 29, 1874, which is the
death date of Philip Riter. Buildings pictured here
correctly coincide with the buildings shown in the 1872 Atlas of the City of
Buffalo... Photo taken from the corner of Indiana and Mary
Streets, looking east toward Illinois Street. The small lane between the open
shed and the 4th building is called Love Alley.
Philips Riten owned all 4 buildings behind the shed. The men in suits are probably
several of Philip Riter's ten sons."

The above photo was taken after the death of Philip Riter in 1874. Upon his
death, his sons founded the Eagle Boiler Works. The
buildings in the photo coincide with the buildings shown in the 1874 Atlas of
the City of Buffalo. "The large man with his hand on
the door of the first building is Charles Lawrence Riter, 9th son of Philip.
Theo ther man in a suit and derby (with mustach) is
Robert E. Riter, 8th son. The man in the wagon appears to be Frederick L. Riter,
10th and youngest son of Philip. The woman
standing in the doorway of the brick building in a dark dress (with her hands
folded) is Margaret Riter, wife of Philip. She
continued to live on Mary Street with her youngest son Frederick as di her 9th
son, Charles, and his wife Johanna."
